I have about five outstanding fic prompts out there right now, and they've been out there for quite a while. I haven't forgotten. I know I need to do it. I just... haven't.

So why the delay? Well, it isn't so much a lack of inspiration or time (although I'm sure both play a factor) so much as it is a general lack of motivation. In general, I just haven't been writing, to the point that when I do write, the words don't flow and everything winds up as crap. It's a problem, and I intend to change it. I'm going to put myself on a schedule (I hate schedules) and make myself wake up early and all that crap that the handbooks and the internets say you should do but that I not-so-secretly super hate.

On a side note, I kind of get the feeling that "retiring" from writing fanfic hurt me more in the long run than it helped me; rather than using the time I spent fic-writing on original stuff, I just used that time to do not-writing things.


Anyway, I'm setting some goals. Below are the five fic prompts that are left outstanding. I'm hoping to knock out one of these a week (I had drafts of all five before, but trashed them all and started over and trashed them again at least three or four times), and if I have these five done by the end of June I'll be a happy camper... and may take more prompts. Or not. We'll see.

If you're keeping up with 25 at 25, you know that so far this year I've accomplished next to nothing, because I am awesome like that. Apparently being awesome also includes never updating journals or Facebooks or whatever to let people know I am, in fact, alive.

So news flash, guys: I'm alive. Just not really doing anything worth talking about.

...okay, just so this entry isn't completely useless. THE FIRST TWO PEOPLE TO COMMENT WITH A PROMPT GET FIC never mind that I have two pending prompts still waiting for me. I WILL EVEN WRITE SMUT FOR A CHANGE, JUST BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE IT. GO!

Happy New Year, LJers! No matter what you thought of 2010, I hope 2011 finds you well.

I didn't make any real resolutions last year, but this year I'm going to challenge myself a little. A friend had the idea that, since we were both turning twenty-five (me this past December, her this coming week) we should accomplish twenty-five things in 2011 and chronicle them. So if you're into that sort of thing and/or want to keep me honest, check out 25 at 25. My list is under (obviously) "Catherine's List", and I'll be posting updates there periodically. If I don't forget.

I will probably forget.

In line with this, I still have two outstanding fic prompts, both Gravi, that I intended to finish before the end of 2010 but ended up not quite managing. That being said, I would really like to have them both finished and posted within the week so that I can go forward in 2011 with more or less a fresh start. So keep a lookout, perhaps? I don't know if I can do it, but I'm certainly going to try!

...still freaking out about this writing thing. Now I have a kitten lying across my chest, though, so that's fun. He's happy, at least. If I could solve the writing dilemma, my night would be made.

So here's what I'm going to do.

Comment with a brief, brief prompt, and I'll write anything from three sentences to three paragraphs of story in reply. It's not quite fiction or anything, but maybe it'll jumpstart my brain. (And if this doesn't work, guys, I'm just going to sulk for, like, a week.) No promises that it'll be good, but I'll do these until either (a) my brain kicks into gear or (b) I go to bed.

Prompt, my pretties, prompt! Oh, and feel free to tell your friends. I don't care. The more, the better!

So back on September 15, when I still had a mess of prompts left to do, I said I was going to finish one a day, giving me an end date of September 26. How did I do?


Okay, so of the twelve prompts I had to write, I finished all but three. And I still intend to get them done. Just... not this weekend, because this weekend is going to be busy-busy. But I'm going to set 10/10 as a goal. October 10. That'll be the day everything is finished and I can finally concentrate on other things.

Like what I'm going to write for NaNoWriMo this year. So far all I know is that it's probably going to involve zombies, if only because I've already written about zombies two Novembers in a row, and they're still in my brain.

But not literally. Because that would be bad. For my brains. And my general well-being.

Okay, guys, I'll confess. I'm a loser. Out of all twelve prompts I listed in this post, I finished a grand total of one in the time span I allotted myself. One. Out of twelve.

However, I insist on having the chance to redeem myself. Starting tomorrow (not today; I'm busy. And if I have the time, I'd like to give myself a head start. Sorry, guys. I cheat like crazy.), I'm going to write -- and finish -- one a day, until I've finished them all. So, by that logic, I should be done on September 26. Logically.

    Buh. I'm not even going to bother making a to-do list today. I mean, I'm just going to ignore it anyway. AS PER USUAL. Lame lame lame. Honestly, I just haven't felt very productive lately. I got so much done last week and I've been busting my butt at work, but none of the stuff I want to do at home seems to be getting done. Things like, y'know, my writing. I'm lucky I've the attention span for the Sims.

    Well, maybe lucky isn't the right word.

    Stupid Sims.

    Proving that I can't get things done, I've officially been working on this entry since 10:30 this morning. It's now almost five o'clock. The delay is mostly because I'm trying to think of something interesting to say but coming up short. I should probably cut my losses and end this entry now. But first...

    Even though I'm behind on everything else I keep saying I'll do: First person to comment to this entry with a prompt (who has not received one from this post or this post) gets a fic of their choosing, provided I'm familiar with the fandom. No time limit on this one, though (sorry!) because I have to finish that other one before I can justify getting to this one.

    » Fact: I am in possession of far too much yarn. This means I have a new goal for myself: stop buying yarn. Or, anyway, stop buying it at least until most of it is used up. The problem with this is that accomplishing this using-it-up goal means I have to knit things. I am less than good at that.

    » OMG, could I be any more behind on story/fic prompts? Not even counting the sixteen (or so) from LAST YEAR, there are two outstanding from last week (one of which is finished but not typed -- sorry, [livejournal.com profile] punctuates!). I'm really just a loser.

    » I have already made plans to go buy new yarn. Whoops.

    » Because she is clearly made of evil and other good things, [livejournal.com profile] masteroftrouble managed to get me addicted to Hyperbole and a Half with a mere link to an icon. I stayed up very, very late reading old blog posts. THIS IS WHAT I DO WITH MY FREE TIME, PEOPLE. And I realized that I've actually been linked to and read many of the posts before but somehow never realized that they were all from the same place, or how amazing they could all be when read consecutively and at three in the morning. So there's that.

    » I am overwhelmed by what shouldn't be an overwhelming weekend. This probably means there will be a to-do list in my future, which is ridiculous because it will be very short. I really don't have that much to do. It just feels like it because everything has to happen all at the same time. Maybe I will write the to-do list on my refrigerator's wipe board and hope for the best.

    » It takes about 10,000 hours to get really good at something, according to something I read on the internet (the internet doesn't lie, right?). That's lots of hours.

    » I'm really hungry right now, and I think it's because I only ate a handful of cranberries and some M&Ms for breakfast (cranberries and dark chocolate-with-a-candy-shell are good for me). This is bad, because it means I am thinking of the chicken breast I have defrosting in the refrigerator (because yes, I sometimes eat things that are not dried fruit and candy) and all the delicious things I can do it later. Right now I'm thinking about chicken curry, which would be awesome if I had rice. I'm pretty sure I do not have rice. Failing that, barbecue chicken sammich. Except I'm not sure if I have barbecue sauce. Dilemma.

    » I am almost out of babeh kitteh's medication, and need to get a new bottle from the vet. I called it in, so now I'm just waiting for them to call me back. It's a race against time: they have until eight tonight. Or eight tomorrow morning, if I have enough for tonight and tomorrow.

    » Speaking of babeh kitteh, he had two seizures last week. One was about two minutes long, the other lasted maybe thirty seconds. This means he gets an increased dosage of his medication -- thus why I already need more -- and that there is little hope of decreasing the meds any time in the near future. Sigh.

    » One of my cabinet doors managed to injure itself. Um. Basically, the little plastic thing that keeps the cabinet door from all but literally adhering to the cabinet itself fell out, and now the cabinet door sticks like crazy. It requires massive pulling on my part to get it open, and it's only a matter of time before I (a) yank it from its hinges or (b) gruesomely injure myself. Although at least if (b) happens, the cabinet door and I will have something in common. And who doesn't aspire to have things in common with inanimate objects, really?

    A few random things:

    • My mother bought me sleep-aids when I mentioned I'd been having trouble sleeping. She's the best mom ever.

    • I've started writing daily to-do lists in a tiny notebook I've dedicated exclusively to this purpose. I never complete said to-do lists. I've pretty much decided I don't care.

    • The kittehs are very excited about their upcoming vet visit. This is because I did not tell them what "castration" means, and because they can not reach my dictionaries.

    • I've decided to re-try writing a huge, epic story-thing I've been musing over for ages. I just don't know how to do it, exactly. Making notes (and re-reading my old notes) is on my to-do list, and has been every day so far this week. I have not done it. No one is surprised.

    • New recipe ideas: moo-shu vegetables, orange-sesame shrimp, hotty-hot-hot spare ribs. I've gone mad with power. And hyphens.

    • Baltimore Restaurant Week. Best (two) week(s) ever? Quite possibly. Have plans for Friday, and am making tentative plans for next Friday as well. Good times.

    • [livejournal.com profile] elevates owns too many scarves. Sixteen, apparently.

    • I have been knitting the same baby hat for over two months now. It is the baby hat that will never end. My next project will have to be done on HUGE needles so that it can be finished quickly and I can stop hating myself and my knitting, I think.

    • I am reconsidering The Novel From Hell. In that "I should really edit that" kind of way. My brother was supposed to help, but he's been completely loser-ish lately, so scratch that. I'll do it myself.

    ...I want to buy new clothes, but really should be saving the money for the house and stuff. Urgh. Stupid priorities. Ann Taylor LOFT, stop looking so damned appealing.

    For those not in the know, I write a certain number of pages every day -- usually. I've been so busy lately, though, that I've fallen forty-six pages behind. So I desperately need to write, but, once again, have been struck with the block bug! So here's the deal: anyone to comment with a prompt gets a story, which I'll post here as a reply. Any fandom (provided I have some base familiarity with it; original stories are fine, too), any theme, any rating. This will continue all night, until I either run out of steam or catch up on my page count.

    Edit: I realized I should probably keep a running page count. So far I have 58 pages out of 46 54 58 64 80 100 screw that noise.

    [livejournal.com profile] cuethe_pulse wrote me some ficcage featuring Gravitation's Eiri, Shuichi, and Tatsuha. It's amazing, of course. One of my favorite fic writers + the Uesugi brothers? Guaranteed awesome. You guys should read it. It's called Smoking on the Roof, and it's wonderful.

    ...speaking of ficcage, I totally have to write something to repay that favor. I also have a few things on my hard drive that need looking over, and one that I'm pretty sure is about ready to post. I just have to decide if I want to bother with Gurabite or not this time around. ^^ (Did anyone else see this? I want to leave some kind of "Aw, we're sad to see you go, sorry it didn't work out..." message, but I'm pretty sure I never read the person's stuff so I really can't. Anyway, it makes a good point, I guess. I miss old!Gurabite. Now the good stuff is very hit-and-miss, and reviews are pretty much all "OMFGYOUSUCK" or "YAY WRITE MORE", neither of which are very helpful at all when I'm trying to figure out what I want to read.)

To begin, I'd like to thank her for being incredibly patient with me. I told her two weeks ago that her prompt was ready, and then the AC adapter on my laptop stopped working and, well... Yes. It's ready now. I apologize for the wait, and the ending. But I hopes you likes it.

    Toward the beginning of the week, I asked people to give me fic prompts. I promised that the first person to reply would definitely get a response, and the rest... might get responses. Since I'm still sort of lame for ideas, I get the feeling at least one additional prompt will be completed, but we'll see.

    Anyway. [livejournal.com profile] zxora commented first, and she asked how Tulio (Road to El Dorado) got his black eye, while he and Miguel were locked in Cortez's brig.

    I am also in need of writing ideas, as my brain has suddenly and unfortunately found itself dry. First person to comment with a prompt gets it written, promise-promise. Anyone else who comments with a prompt might receive written compensation, but I wouldn't count on it. :/ I'm apparently not very good at keeping those sorts of promises.

    [livejournal.com profile] jinsai did this meme ages ago, and I bookmarked it so I could do it later. Then [livejournal.com profile] mortenavida posted a variation of it a few days ago, and I remembered that I still Hadn't Done It. So, um, I did it. And I didn't do a fantastic job, but I'm pleased with at least two of the results.
