Did you know...?

I have a net-friend who lives in Sweden. She recently had a baby girl. After giving me all the baby stats (weight, volume, meat, etcetera), she went on to tell me about the baby's name. I have since discovered that Sweden has what is easily one of the most ridiculous and useless government institutions I have ever heard of: the Swedish Baby Naming Commission. That's not really the proper name for it, but said friend couldn't remember it in full.

When a Swedish woman has a baby, she has to submit the name to the Swedish government for approval. There are guidelines -- yes, guidelines -- for naming her child and, if she's lucky, the Swedish bureaucrats will like the name and let her baby keep it. If they don't like the name, the government sends the woman a list of approved names. Seriously.

My Swedish friend wishes to name her baby Daphne, which I think is a lovely name. It doesn't sound particularly Swedish to me, but what do I know? All the luck to her.

Mmmhm. That was about my reaction, too.

A marvelous choice of words.

I heard about that. A while back this couple in Sweden wanted to name their baby son 'Axl' after Axl Rose from Guns and Roses and the government said no way. I'm not sure who to side with in that particular case ^^;

Good luck to your friend though!

Reeeaaally? I hadn't heard that. ^.^ In comparision, Daphne should be pretty normal. Maybe yon friend will get a passable name.

Uhm.
>_>
Riiiiight.

Well put.

There's a similar thing in Japan. Japanese are supposed to pick names from an approved list. A couple wanted to name their son "Akuma" and the government denied them. The idiot parents went to court over it but they were shot down. ^_^

*SNERK* If nothing else, I am amused by their choice of name. It's no wonder they were shot down.

Devil or demon.

I think that's a bloody good thing, frankly.

Could be.

Less babies named Apple though...

How does that work for Tohma? Isn't he half Swedish...

Besides the point. Don't mind my childish ranting ^___^

[identity profile] kageotogi.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
A brilliant use of punctuation, my dear.

[identity profile] colonel-sho.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
And I thought the Swedish could do no wrong. I'll be damned.

[identity profile] kageotogi.livejournal.com 2005-06-29 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggle* Damned you are, then.
