I know Christmas-in-Japan is a big merchandising thing, and a lot of Japanese do the whole gift-exchange, but I don't think Christmas really enters the home a lot of times. In any case, the story insists that Christmas be a very important thing to one of the characters... which isn't entirely realistic.
