Yesterday was the Banned Book Reading and it was delightful. Every who read did extremely well! [livejournal.com profile] slyfox78 started things off with The Lorax, [livejournal.com profile] dbxbeastie read Walter the Farting Dog, and things went off from there! I was third from the end and I read from Voltaire's Candide, specifically the part with the girls, the monkeys, and the BigLugs (chapter sixteen). Gerry read from Howl and Doctor Lutz finished things off with a brief excerpt from America: The Book. All in all, it was a lot of fun. My thanks go out to Jesse, Melissa, and [livejournal.com profile] pereppi for having attended and supported us and such. It was a lot of fun to listen to Melissa giggle and gasp while I talked about the monkeys. ^_~

The reading wasn't the only thing that made yesterday pretty decent. My first two classes of the morning were canceled -- Neo-European Literature was a conference day and Monsieur Carr didn't have power at home and, consequently, didn't come to campus -- and Shakespeare was decent in that the psycho-doctor didn't ask me to read anything, even though she picked on [livejournal.com profile] vetes3 and [livejournal.com profile] tir_synni both. Haha. :P

Work yesterday was okay, if boring; I worked with Kyle, who I adore, and some bizarre student of Gerry's. It was okay, I suppose.

Form and Theory came afterward; Barkley stole the first half hour or so of class so we could all read our flash fictions before Doctor Hurd took over. I like having her as a teacher; she's not quite as laid-back as Barkley and she's going to make us do more work than he did, but she's still a great teacher. Then there was poetry, and [livejournal.com profile] uk_hopeful brought in pizza for everyone. ^.^ She's such a sweetheart (and it was her birthday -- happy slightly belated 22nd, Lenora!). Poetry ended early so we could hit up the Banned Book Reading and... Well, that was mostly it.

Note to me: snitch one of the BBR posters, because they are funny as can be.

Work today is kind of blah. I had a student sign up for a two-hour appointment and we only used half of that time. I have another student at one o'clock. Yaaaay. Until then... Well, I promised my dear and lovely [livejournal.com profile] slyfox78 a K/Judy story, so let's see what I can do.

Strain
For Joan

They had known from the beginning that this would be difficult. NG Studios had hired Claude to be Sakuma Ryuichi's manager and, even though Ryuichi would be trying his hand at American stardom now, Claude and Judy realized there were going to be long periods of time during which they would be separated, unable to communicate except perhaps by telephone. Judy, after all, had movies to work on and photos to shoot. Claude would almost constantly be with Ryuichi, guarding him, translating for him, pushing him on to achieve greatness in a strange new world.

Ryuichi hadn't been able to pronounce Claude's name for a very long time, so he had shortened it to K. It was easier for the Japanese superstar to pronounce, after all, and Claude -- K -- found that he rather liked it. It grew on him, if not on Judy, and that was just another thing that managed to come between them.

Michael was conceived on one of those wonderful but brief hotel-room moments when both their schedules meshed together. They had made love at gunpoint, reenacting not only their first meeting but also their honeymoon, the beginning years of their marriage, and their fantasies. One false move, Judy had whispered in his ear, and you're dead. K -- Claude then, just for the night -- had smiled and nodded, tracing her sides with his fingertips and re-memorizing the contours of her body. It had been wonderful, and, nine months later, Michael was born. K hadn't been able to be there for the birth -- he had business with Ryuichi back in New York -- but he had traveled to Vegas (where Judy's latest movie was being shot) to be with his wife and his newborn son a few days later, as soon as he tied up the loose ends with Ryuichi's latest record deal.

It was difficult then, but they had expected that. They met up when they could and, when they did, they were the happiest (if most violent) of couples. There were passionate nights that were interrupted by K's beeper or Judy's cell phone, loving days mixed with business deals and lunches, already brief goodbyes cut short by airplanes, trains, buses, taxis, limousines. It was business and they learned to manage.

They hadn't entirely expected NG Studios to offer K a full-time position in Tokyo. Under normal circumstances, K never would have accepted it, but this was the opportunity of a lifetime. The pay was good and Seguchi Tohma, the main executive, was practically handing K the chance to do what it was he loved -- shape new musicians into stars by whatever means he deemed necessary. K had discussed it, briefly, with Judy, and she had urged him to do it despite the problems it would make for their already tense relationship, despite the fact that the chances of their schedules meshing in Japan were so much less in their favor than they were in America, despite everything.

K took the job, Judy made her movies, Michael was passed back and forth from mother to father and back via airplane every so often, when it was convenient. And it was, as expected, difficult. Their passionate nights were fewer, their loving days were rare, their brief goodbyes were only over the phone or, given the time difference, email. They communicated through Michael and voice mail, and they tried to ignore the strain it put on their marriage. Sometimes they talked about one or the other of them quitting their job and moving to be with the other, but neither wanted that; they were both happy with their careers. They were doing what they loved, even if it meant being far away from the person they loved most in the world, and although they discussed it they never were sure if they could really go through with quitting should the other suddenly agree with the plan and say it was for the best.

The times Bad Luck, the band K managed, were in America were some of the happiest for him. He always told Judy beforehand if the band would be traveling and she would surprise him by meeting him at the airport -- or, in some cases, on the plane, where she would shoot wildly until he pulled out his own firearms and lovingly retaliated. People would scream, they would exercise their right to bear arms, and then they would remember why they had been together for so long in spite of everything.

Not many people understood the relationship K and Judy had, or why they maintained it given the distance, the problems, the difficulties involved. The couple ignored the questions, the prying glances, the whispers. What did all of that matter? They had what they had, and it worked.

---the end---

I hope you liked it, Joan. ^^
