Yeah, I had my first sign language class today. Not only can I spell virtually any word in the dictionary, I can sign various sorts of colors, work, study, breakfast, lunch, dinner, horny, bitch, sex, thirsty, reading, running, dog, and other fun words.
She (the instructor) didn't really mean to teach us whore, bitch, or sex, given that there were children in second grade and younger there (three little kids, one seventh grader. A bunch of middle-aged people as well and one ninety-three year old), but she did it by accident and subtle hints... For example, while teaching us "breakfast" she said:
"Unlike lunch and dinner, you can't just do the letter sign next to your mouth, because if you put a b next to your mouth like that you'll end up with a word that rhymes with witch."
We learned horny in a similar manner (rhymes with corny) while learning the sign for "thirsty" and sex while learning "work," as "the positions of your wrists are very important when signing work because if you have the wrists facing each other you end up with something that might be work for some adults but that others make a lot of money on. It doesn't rhyme with much of anything, but it starts with s."
It's a fun class. Not only are we learning the usual stuff, she's accidentally teaching us the other things too.
And it is accidental, trust me, because she never really realized she was doing it until we started laughing. Then she'd kind of blush and say "sorry, sometimes I forget that I'm not teaching the older group anymore--the ones who plan on interpreting for a living."
I enjoyed it muchly.
Limp Bizkit's "My Way" song is still in my head... I think I might write a YYH songfic to it and then beg Stevie to somehow turn it into a music video for me... Just for the hell of it. Think you could do that, Stevie? *big chibi eyes*
