Mmm. I was far too tired to update this yesterday, so I'll do it now (while I'm procrastinating on finishing/working on my Shakespeare paper).

Yesterday was Frostburg State's Homecoming, and it was... interesting. It rained all day, for one, and that made for lots of miserable band people -- and game attendees. The pep rally had been canceled the night before, so we met at 8:30 for practice but were not allowed on the field because it was Teh Suck. So we had a music practice -- outside -- and went over the schedule. It was all the usual stuff, really, and we got out a little early. Those of us in Annie's car -- Annie, myself, Greg, Chris, Kyle, and Adrienne -- used this time to find Adrienne's car and then hit up the McDonalds for breakfast. This took longer than expected, however, and we arrived at the parade (scheduled to start at 10:00) a little late -- late enough that the parade had actually started by the time we got there, and we had to run past Kunkle to get into our respective lines. Kunkle, we found out later, decided that we were late because we had to deal with the rain gear (Annie and I are the band's uniform committee) and didn't care. We decided not to tell him the real reason why we were late.

Not many people showed up for the parade, given the rain, but enough were there to make it worthwhile. And it was fun. Afterward we waited around for Annie and Adrienne to get their respective cars and then drive back to pick us up and bring us back to campus. All was well, even though we complained the entire time we sat there waiting.

Oh, right. Nearly forgot. After our morning practice, Kunkle gifted us all with red ski-cap hats (which he called toboggans) for us to wear instead of our shako/helmets. This was uber-nice, because they were a great deal warmer than the shakos and a lot less annoying, too. ^.^ Nonetheless, we teased him for calling them toboggans, which we all insisted were just a kind of sled.

After the parade, we met up in the band room to prepare for the tail-gating party. Annie and I took a few minutes to go downstairs and collect the rain gear, which are nasty-ugly ponchos that, we discovered, all smelled a great deal like vomit. It was very, very gross... but they did keep us warm and dry (and the smell eventually faded enough so that we stopped noticing it). We went down to the tail-gating party, which was also fun despite the fact that next-to-no one showed up. Then we went into pre-game, finished with that, and went into the stands.

The football game was surprisingly interesting -- our team scored twice in the first quarter and then two more times in the second quarter. Since the field was so muddy, the band lined up on the track and just played through the show instead of marching it, which was fine but not ideal. We played it. We pretended to care about the homecoming court, and then rushed through our last number so we could finish it without being penalized by the refs for holding halftime longer than we were supposed to. We had third quarter off and I went to bother my parents, who gave me money and pointed me to the concession stand for hot chocolate (did I mention that it was really cold out there?).

After third quarter, half the band came back late, so Kunkle started making A List. I'm sure we'll hear about it on Tuesday.

In the end, the football team won the game 45-9, proving that they really were taken over by pod people. We didn't just win -- we crushed them, which was absolutely bizarre -- our team simply isn't that good!

Anyway. Went back to the band room to deal with that stuff, went back to my room, showered, listened to my father snore on the bed, talked with my mother about graduate school, and then woke up my dad and went to dinner at Penny's Diner. Dinner wasn't so great, but I enjoyed spending the time with my parents. They left shortly afterward and I got started on my Shakespeare paper.

Sort of. Actually, I wrote a crappy first paragraph and then re-wrote it. Then [livejournal.com profile] mortenavida called me (squee!) and we talked for over an hour while I ignored my paper. The ignoring of the paper continued and I went to bed at one-thirty-ish. I awakened a little before noon (yay me!) and then trudged back to my desk to do some reading for Neo-Lit and get back to work on the Shakespeare paper.

I've made decidedly little progress. Strangely, I'm okay with that.

Joan is still gone. Sad.
