I think Kaylee-fish has a tumor. I've known for a while that she wasn't doing too hot, and whimper pointed out a sizable lump last time she was here. I've done some research and that's really what it looks like, which means there isn't much of anything I can do. Just in case, I'm planning to do a complete water change. I don't plan to medicate for fear that makes things worse, but we'll see.

If she dies, I think she'll be my last fish for a while. She's lasted a good long time and I really like having fish, but getting attached to them and then not being able to do much of anything when they get really, really sick gets pretty depressing.

It really depends on the species of the fishes, but I know some fishes grow lumps out of the blue, e.g. like my goldfish. The lump was a bit of a different color and quite noticable, and long story short- after I changed the food the goldfish changed to it's previous state within several days.

Turns out that some types of fish food can make them change appearance quite greatly and the salesman didn't bother to mention it to me.

I'm sorry to hear about your fish. My mom had one that some of us (in my family) got really attached to, and when he died, I knew she shouldn't have another fish for awhile because it was really sad. :(
