So. Yes. Work.

I'm scheduled to work today from ten to one, which was fantastic because it means I would get to talk to [livejournal.com profile] tir_synni for a while (and distract her from her essay-writing fervor). My first appointment was a no-show, which was delicious, and I took a walk-in about half-past ten. Said walk-in was a bit annoying; he spoke in whispers, was super-timid, and didn't quite come in prepared. Blah. Nonetheless, his paper wasn't bad and he was a good student to work with -- I've had worse.

Then, as I was writing up my report, all Hell broke loose.

Apparently one of the Orientation advisors had made going to the Writing Center a requirement for their upcoming paper, which was due today, and half the class decided to put the paper off and come to the Center at the very last minute. I looked up from my report and there were people clustered at the desk asking for appointments between then and two o'clock, with more people coming in through the door and two more at the computers with reservations.

Eek.

Unfortunately for these people, this is the first day this semester where every tutor has had every spot full up, so there were no available spots. I promised to meet with as many as I could; my second appointment of the day only lasted half an hour or so and I dealt with three students between 11:30 and 12:00. Squee. Unfortunately for me, I agreed to stick around until two because of the rush, thinking my two scheduled appointments would be longer. As it turned out, a lot of the students either left in a huff or scheduled their appointments between one and two. So I'll be here until two-thirty-ish, even though my third scheduled appointment no-showed, because the Orie people didn't leave phone numbers behind with their names. *cringe*

Half an hour of idleness and then an hour and a half of extra-hours for me. At least my time-sheet will be gloriously and wondrously full, meaning that when I do finally get paid (it takes six to seven weeks for Direct Deposit to start working) I'll have a lot of sushi/manga money.

Hopefully.

I work at the Writing Center at my college too and just went through the near-exact same thing. Instructors make it a requirement, students slack, then bombard us at the last minute. *grumbles* And the procrastinators are usually the ones that don't care too much in the first place, so their papers need the most work. We have a pretty small Center, too. Only about 15 readers and we're at a point in the semester where a lot of papers are coming due, so it's hard to schedule one appointment, much less 25-30.

Aren't no-shows the most glorious things ever? Er, I mean, the satisfaction that comes from helping the students is the most glorious thing ever. Right. *nods* I shouldn't complain, it's actually a great job.

Hope your day gets better!

I actually like cancellations more than no-shows; cancellations mean I don't have to (a) fill out any more paperwork and (b) don't have to look at the door everytime someone comes in and wonder "is that them?". So. Yes. Yay cancellations. ^_~

Most of the papers for the Orie kids (the ones who have been bombarding us) have only been a page and a half or so long. One of them was really REALLY good. The rest have been kinda'... Blah. You know how it is. ^_~ Since there are so many of them, though, and they're all due at two, I decided not to give anymore more than twenty minutes unless I like 'em. They deserve it for waiting until the last minute. ^_~

Our center is pretty small, too. The budget is bad, the college is small, and so the funds are limited. We have... fourteen (I think) tutors on staff and I know that at least two of them work in classrooms as teacher aids and not in the center. *cringe* Today I was the only tutor in the Center from 10-12 (until Shannon came in), and now there's four of us in here! It's crazy. ^__^

My day is slowly improving. My roommate ([livejournal.com profile] slyfox78) came by to cheer me up and I took a super-quick lunch break... and I see light! I have one more guy scheduled to come in, and he's not here yet, so I'm going to wait fifteen minutes and bail if he's still not here. ^_~

Aw, no one bothers to officially cancel with us. :(

We have a pretty small budget too. Right now, most of it is being used to send us to the November convention which sounds pretty cool. I didn't go last year but everyone who did seemed to really like it.

I'm so glad you had a better day and I hope you got to bail early. ^_~

We have a no-show policy -- if you get two no-shows, you aren't allowed to schedule any more appointments at the center! ^__^ It works pretty well.

That's actually a really good idea. I'll have to pass that on. 'Cause, as much slacky goodness as no-shows can be, they do impede the work process. I can't start a new paper really if I'm waiting for someone to come in and, at busier times like this, we don't really have time for the distractions. We have a 24-hour turnaround policy (which can be near impossible at times), so it's pretty high-speed.

*blinks* I kinda finished the essay. Kinda. A little. *continues poking screen* I made a good attempt?
Manga's always good. *nods solemnly* Remember: manga over food any day of the week. XD

Mmm. Manga is the best diet program ever -- you get so caught up in buying and reading it that you forget to buy and eat food! So wonderful. ^__^

Manga works really well for that. So does Photoshop. I think I've went twelve hours on it and not ate or anything. I was in the ZONE!!!

Mmmhm. Photoshop is teh wonderful. I'm not very good at it, though, because I can only make craptastic icons and banners. *cringe*

Also: Tricia says she wants DVD copier software. (This is what I get for commenting to things at work -- Tricia reads over my shoulder. ^_~)
